Recall Alert: Peregrina Cheese Corp.

New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker today warned consumers not to consume certain 'Queso Fresco, Fresh Cheese', made by Peregrina Cheese Corp. due to possible Listeriacontamination.

The cheese is foil wrapped, 14 oz. net weight package and has a code of 3973.

The contamination was discovered during a routine sample of the cheese, taken by an inspector from the Division of Milk Control and Dairy Services on November 27, 2007. It was subsequently tested by the Department’s Food Laboratory which found the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in it. The manufacturer was notified on 6th December which then issued the voluntarily recall.

Listeria contaminated product could cause Listeriosis, a disease that usually causes mild flu-like symptoms in healthy individuals and meningitis or blood poisoning in immune-compromised individuals. Pregnant women are seen as a high-risk group, as Listeriosis can also cause stillbirths.
To date, no illnesses are known by the Department to be associated with this product.
